RFCOP Crime Update - July 15th-21st, 2013

Shooting in the Forge last Wednesday:

We are all very aware of the shooting/murder on Murdock last Wednesday.  There have been numerous discussions and speculations as to what caused the event, concern for the individual and family, concern on housing and effects this has on our neighborhood.  The bottom line is that crime can happen anywhere, any time in any capacity.   We would all like to find a place that things like this would never happen.  But unfortunately that is not possible!! 

The reality is that we need to be aware that any type of crime, including murder, which has happened in the best of neighborhoods (long before this incident) can happen in our neighborhood or anywhere.  There are many ways to make this happen.  One is helping to control the crime in your neighborhood and surrounding areas by letting the criminals know we are watching them.  Crime had decreased drastically since 2009 when Mike Calwell, John and I took leadership of the RFCOP.  We were lucky to have a dedicated few, approximately 8-10 patrollers in a neighborhood of 1,777 homes.  We have attempted to recruit new patrollers to broaden our “eyes and ears”, with little success.  The bike thefts, car break-ins and thefts have increased in volume and boldness.   Before, most thefts were those of opportunity – unlocked cars, garages, bike left out in plain view.  The amount of breaking and entering is on an up rise.

The truth is the crime will not become decreased on a permanent basis until we the community work together to make this happen.  Your COP group can only do so much with a handful of patrollers.  Since the murder in our home area we have had a couple of volunteers stepping forth requesting to join.  The truth is we need more.  Many have not experienced as one our patrollers mentioned, the difference between the day and night life of the Forge.

July 17: First Degree Burglary, 1800 Dalhousie Court, 21234

Between 7 a.m. and 3:52 p.m., an unknown suspect pried open the apartment door and moved a television from the stand to the floor. Nothing was taken.

July 17 to July 19: First Degree Burglary, 8300 block of Loch Raven Boulevard, 21234

Between 6 a.m. on July 17 and 2 a.m. on July 19, an unknown suspect broke a window to enter the apartment. Electronics and money were taken.

July 15: Robbery, 1300 block of Taylor Avenue, 21234

At 9:25 p.m., a black male grabbed a phone out of the victim's hand and grabbed the victim's ear.

July 14 to July 15: Attempted First Degree Burglary, 1400 block of Dartmouth Avenue, 21234

Between 9 a.m. on July 14 and 4 a.m. on July 15, an unknown suspect tried to force open a basement door. Entry was not gained.

Shooting - MURDOCK ROAD AND BLENHEIM ROAD, BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD

07/17/2013 05:30 AM. Baltimore County police have released the name of a man found dead inside an overturned car in Towson early Wednesday morning. Donte Antonio Stephens, 36, of the 500 block of N. Schroeder Street in Baltimore, was discovered inside a silver Dodge vehicle in the area of Murdock and Blenheim roads in Rodgers Forge after officers responded to a call of shots fired, according to a news release. There were no other injuries, but several parked cars were damaged. Police said Stephens was shot at least once and are looking into the possibility that he was targeted.

Baltimore County Police arrested a 22-year-old unidentified man for last week's murder of Donte. A Stephens in Towson. The suspect was arrested in Baltimore City at approximately noon on Wednesday. On July 17 officers responded to reports of shots fired at the intersection of Murdock Road and Blenheim Road. Near the intersection police found the victim, deceased, inside an overturned Silver Dodge. Investigations revealed that the victim was living at a home on Murdock Road with his girlfriend and her daughter. The suspect is an acquaintance of the daughter. Several days before the homicide the victim and the suspect got into an argument, though the exact motive for the homicide has yet to be determined, detectives said. According to police there are no known gang connections in the case. Additional details will become available after the suspect is formally charged.
