Here is an update on the Stevenson Lane water leak I asked for from the city Department of Public Works. Please share! David Marks
Mr. Marks,
DPW Maintenance has been working along with a leak detection specialist firm, WACHs, over the past several weeks to determine the source of the water periodically observed surfacing at the intersection of York Rd and Stevenson.
There have been a series of overnight water main shutdowns starting with the smaller 6 " to the largest 36". Unfortunately, there was no affect on the condition to allow a determination of which main may be the source of the water. As of today there is little or no water surfacing from the plated area. All mains in the York & Stevenson intersection have now been successfully shutdown with no conclusive evidence of where the water leak is coming from. It is possible that a large volume of water has accumulated and longer shut off time is required on this 36" main to determine if it is the source of the leak. The other mains when shutdown were left off for longer periods of time. Given the episodic nature of the surfacing water It could also be that the water source is coming from somewhere else.
The process being used is considered the most efficient manner to gain information. The alternative would be opening a larger excavation and trying to follow the water to a source. This would be very disruptive to the traffic flow for a longer period of time. Large scale excavation also presents increased risk of damage to adjacent utilities and buried traffic signal conduits that cross the intersection.
We are continuing with our investigation and will keep you informed of the progress towards a resolution. I would be pleased to discuss this in more detail at your convenience.
