Forgers in Need of Home Improvment Advice!

Several Forgers have reached out to me asking about some references and advice for home improvement projects. Use the comments in the post to ask your questions, refer your best workers and companies or anything else you'd like to discuss regarding fixing up your home!

  1. ATTIC INSULATION: I'm sure we could improve our attic, starting with a "box" built around the drop-down stairs so that cold air doesn't seep into our hallway when it's "closed." There is even an 18" portion of the attic under the eaves (if that's the term for the area at the very edge of the attic floor, above the front door) that seems to be quite open to the air.I want to either hire someone to add rolls of thicker insulation batting or loose-fill, as long as it can still fit beneath the plywood flooring--or need encouragement to do it myself. Advice? Experience? Recommendations for professionals?

  2. This is why the RF listserv was created. You can ask questions or look through past messages and also do key word searches, like plumber or electrician:

  3. I would recommend Carroll Insulation - 410-795-0600. Ask for the owners Larry or Matt Helminiak. They sold me an unsulated stair cover (over the drop-down stairs), but they are a full-service insulation company.

Thay came out after I asked about needing more insulation. They checked and said it was fine and offered the stair cover--things have been warmer ever since. Very good people to work with.

  4. I want to recommend Chip (George Kroener) of Atlantic Coast Construction & Renovations. Phone 443-527-1464. He can do anything from kitchen, bath and basement renovations to any small jobs around the house. He is sincere, conscientious, and honest besides being a creative problem solver. He has corrected a number of things done by previous workmen whom I thought were good, even some located through Angie’s List. He is also good to work with and nice to have around, a combination hard to beat. You may contact me to talk about his work: C. Cook-Fuller 410-321-7256.
