Crime Alert Update

From Lake Evesham – 1/14 2:00 pm shared on Nextdoor neighbor
A coworker who lives in Homeland just shared this with me...wanted to make sure everyone was aware.
The following email was received this morning from Major Burrus of the Northern District Baltimore City PD:

On January 9th, 2014 at approximately 9 pm Northern District officers responded to a home in the 6100 block of York Rd. for a burglary in progress. When officers arrived at the home they observed the rear door kicked in and several suspects exiting out a separate door. When the suspects saw the officers, 3 of them ran back inside and the 4th suspect fled on foot through the yards toward Lake Ave. The officers pursued the 3 suspects that ran back inside the home and placed them under arrest. Back up officers canvassed the area for the 4th but were unsuccessful in locating him. The 4th suspect was described as a b/m/13-16 years of age, approximately 5'3" wearing glasses and a black jacket.

The suspects who were arrested had book bags filled with the victim's property (clothing, electronics & jewelry). One suspect had stolen property on him from a burglary that had just been committed in the 600 block of Anneslie Rd. in Baltimore County.

Two of the suspects arrested were juveniles (b/m/14 and a b/m/16) and the 3rd suspect was an adult (w/m/20, Nancy Wilson of the 500 block of Tunbridge Rd.) All the suspects were charged with theft, burglary and malicious destruction of property. Baltimore County Police will be charging the suspects with the burglary they committed in the 600 block of Anneslie Rd.
Detectives from Baltimore City and Baltimore County believe these suspects are responsible for many of the recent burglaries that have occurred in Homeland, Rosebank, Lake Walker, Chinquapin Park Belvedere, Bellona Gittings, Stoneleigh and Towson. I hope to see a reduction in the number of burglaries that have occurred in the northern part of the District with the arrest of these suspects but will leave you with a few crime prevention tips that relate to residential burglaries.

• Utilize good quality doors with reinforced frames
• Utilize deadbolts on your front and rear doors

• Keep your porch lights turned on after dark

• Invest in an audible alarm that detects glass breakage and/or interior motion

• Lock all doors and windows including those on the second story

• Record serial numbers to electronics and either mark or engrave them with your driver's license number

• Cut back overgrown shrubs and bushes

Please pass these tips on to your friends and neighbors and remember that if you see someone or something SUSPICIOUS please CALL 911 !

Major Kimberly Burrus

Please also be aware that suspects are knocking on doors to see if anyone is home and if you answer ask a question like "Do you know where Northern Parkway and Loch Raven meet".  If you are home you don't need to open the door, merely tell them through the door you aren't interested. Call the police. In many of the break-ins neighbors of the victim have reported someone knocking on their door and when they answer they ask something like Is this where Joe lives?  Clearly they were checking to see if anyone was home.

IF YOU SEE/HEAR SOMETHING SUSPICIOUS, CALL 911.

RFCOP Crime Report - December 30th - January 5th

Volunteers bring blankets, food to Towson's homeless
Two Rodgers Forge community activists have taken it upon themselves during the recent cold spell to seek out Towson's homeless late at night and offer them donated blankets and food.  The first link includes 8 pictures and one video.  The 2nd link is to the video only.
The pair, both members of the local Citizens on Patrol, have been driving around Towson in the early hours of the day (they usually start around midnight), handing out blankets and food, and trying to find as many people living on the streets as they can.

As Wednesday, Jan. 8 turned to Thursday, Williams and Falconer allowed me (Jon Sham) and a Towson Times reporter Jon Meoli to tag along in their tightly-packed sedan to document their experience.

Message Concerning Recent Burglaries from BCPD

A message from Sgt. Fink – 1/3/2014
re: Recent Burglaries

Over the past two weeks our Towson communities have experienced a rash of residential burglaries, thefts of property.  Although we've not identified any specific pattern to these burglaries nor is one neighborhood being targeted over any other there are a few things we here at Towson Precinct would like to address and have you, our Community Leaders, Contacts get out to your neighbors.  Should you a have a Community Newsletter/email please include this with it. These incidents have occurred in both our residential communities and apartment complexes.
First, with these burglaries happening through the Christmas Holiday many were in connection with the easy accessibility to valuable property/items that could be easily removed from one's residence once entry was made.
As for entry those responsible made it by a multitude of ways: open door, unlocked door, possibly having a door key; reaching through a mail slot on the door, slipping through a "doggy door".
The message we'd like to get out to everyone is to once again always be vigilant in protecting yourself, your home and property.  Even doing something like going out to start your car this time of year to warm it up from the cold, keep your keys with you and if your front door and /or vehicle is out of your sight in the process secure them so no one can enter behind you.  If you lose keys, replace those locks, don't give someone access to your house by using our own keys.  Mail slots, if all you have is a door knob lock securing your front door install a deadbolt lock but make sure it is far enough away from the mail slot that someone cannot reach through and unlock the deadbolt. If you already have a deadbolt and it's within reach of the mail slot you may want to consider another lock/deadbolt.  Doggy doors, if you have a way of securing that entry while you're out please use it. Just understand burglars, thieves come in many shapes and sizes and though not many people can crawl through a doggy door some can so do what you can to secure this access point to your home when you're out.
With the apartment complexes one thing Officers were noting was that many residents were away over the Holidays so the thieves took advantage of the reduced population. If you live in an apartment complex and know your fellow residents then look out for each other. If you don't know your fellow residents at least recognize those who you know belong in the building so that if you see someone you don't recognize or know to be allowed in the building--maintenance, Postal Carriers, Delivery People, etc--call 911 or at least Building Management if it's someone who looks like they're working in the building but you're not exactly sure.
Please always be vigilant in securing your valuables inside your home, locking all your doors, windows, vehicles.  Keep an eye outside, call 911 any time you see something suspicious, criminal and be alert to what's going on around you, your house. your neighborhood always.
Thank You, Sgt Stephen Fink, 2815  PC06 COT

From a Neighbor:
Threatening man with off-leash dog St. Pius Fields / Forge Park
Pius driveway, ignoring me as I came up to talk to him, then started to hurry away from me through snow, dragging his dog. I pursued, calling out "Sir, excuse me, please come back... your dog destroyed my daughter's sled." When I got closer, he whirled around, put his right hand in his jacket pocket and said, "I've got a .38 and I'll use it on you."

It was obvious (fortunately) that there wasn't room in his pocket for a gun, and I talked him down and he eventually reimbursed me the $20 the sled cost, when I would have simply accepted a sincere apology from the get go (along with a promise to keep better control of his pet).

Guy: was probably late 40s, large glasses, out of shape, thinning brown/grey hair, 5' 8 or so, dark winter coat.
Dog: was a young skinny black lab-type with red collar, energetic
Location: Forge park (lower field behind St. Pius) near Schwartz Avenue
Man last seen headed toward south driveway toward york, between Channel 2 and St. Pius.

1. Watch out for the dog. Rambunctious / won't heel, runs FAR off leash, snatches toys.
2. Watch out for the guy, remind him to keep his dog leashed, give him the stink eye.

Sad day when people won't take personal responsibility, and feel so threatened when asked to do the right thing that they in turn resort to threats of violence.

Not worth a police report, but worth posting.
-        Post on Nextdoor Neighbor, most replies were that she should file a police report as she was verbally threatened that he had a gun.  1/3/2014 approximately 6:00 pm

RFCOP Crime Report - December 23rd - 29th

Schools re-open January 2, 2014 and Baltimore County police will be on the lookout over the next few weeks for drivers who pass school buses that are stopped to pick up or discharge students. Drivers put County children at risk for serious injury or death when passing a stopped school bus.
Maryland law states that vehicles must come to a complete stop on both sides of the street if there is no physical divider or barrier. Drivers may not pass the bus until all lights have ceased flashing.
  • Drivers passing school buses while the lights are flashing will be fined $570 and issued a 3-point penalty on their record.
  • Drivers who stop but then proceed while the lights are flashing will be fined $570 and a 2-point penalty will be charged.
  • If an accident occurs after the driver has stopped then proceeds to pass the bus, he or she will be fined $610 and will be charged 3-points.
Police will be patrolling throughout the County and will ticket drivers who do not obey. When a driver is pulled over, officers will check to see if the person has a valid operator’s license. The vehicle’s registration will be checked as well to see if there are any outstanding tickets. If a driver has a revoked or suspended license, he or she will be taken into custody.
Children don’t always pay attention when crossing the street. Be a responsible driver and stop when a school bus is loading and unloading students.

cell phone recyling kiosks: message from our Councilman

General Growth Properties informed me last night that the EcoATM kiosks from both Towson Town Center and White Marsh Malls will be removed by the end of December.

The kiosks were seen as a way to quickly recycle cell phones. There were concerns that many of the break-ins in Towson and Parkville were done by criminals targeting small electronics.

I am very pleased with this development, since the County Council was working on legislation to try to better regulate the recycling of these devices.   I would like to publicly thank General Growth Properties for voluntarily removing the kiosks.

Please feel free to pass along this news.

FROM OUR NEIGHBORS AND NEIGHBORING COMMUNITIES:

Suspicious Van:

I just wanted to let you know that as a friend and I were returning from a run this morning, 12/30 about 7 a.m. There was a van circling the Thicket/ Boxwood/ Midhurst/ Mossway circle that seemed suspicious.  It was dark blue/ green in color and the plate was 70X 937.  I called Baltimore County police to let them know.
Reply to above – 12/30I saw the same van parked on Midhurst (3 houses in between Blenheim and Bellona), the van was running with two white males, the driver was around late fifties early sixties.
Blenheim Burglaries:
12/28 - This message is to inform you that a house in the 6400 block of Blenheim was broken into tonight.  The back door was broken down and the house ransacked.  These are the only details we have at this time.  If we receive additional information after the crime lab arrives, we’ll let you know. As always, please be vigilant in looking out for yourselves and each other.
 Sincerely, Gaywood Community Association

12/29 - Gaywood Alert - My house was also broken into last night. I live at 64xx Bellona Avenue at the corner of Gaywood and Bellona. I was not home when this incident occurred and found my door open when I came home this morning. The intruders kicked my side door in. I had a deadbolt on the door but the force shattered the door frame and pulled it entirely away from the wall with the dead bolt still in place on the door. All of my valuable jewelry was stolen including pieces that had been in my family for generations. The police have already fingerprinted the pertinent areas of my home.
ARMED ROBBERY:
Sun 12/29/2013 9:32 AM - A bunch of police cars headed down York Road a few minutes ago. I'm listening to a scanner now. Apparently a male, I don't know the race, had a 9mm handgun and try to rob or did rob Starbucks near in the Giant Food Shopping Center. The male was wearing sunglasses, mid to late 20's and had a mask and hoodie. The suspect was last seen behind Chipolte heading toward the city.
