Update On Recent Break-Ins From BCPD

Forge Car Break Ins - Criminals caught: - Kudos to the Forge Resident who called 911!!!
At approximately 5:20 this past Saturday morning Officers working the Midnight Shift in Towson arrested 2 subjects for breaking into vehicles in the Rodgers Forge Community.  A Forge resident observed these two subjects trying car door handles then enter those cars found to be unlocked; this resident then called 9-1-1 for Police response. Assisted by a K-9 Officer PC06 Officer Burns located the two subjects and placed them under arrest when they were found in possession of numerous items not belonging to them.  No force was required in entering any vehicle but the subjects were found in possession of numerous GPS units, money, an ipad and also two bank cards at the time of their arrest.  These two were charged with nine theft cases following their arrest.

The Thornleigh community has also seen a recent rash of thefts from vehicles and although the method of theft is identical the two subjects arrested denied any involvement when questioned about those crimes.
Once again I am passing this information along to all of our community representatives of Towson to get the word out again to your neighbors to properly secure all vehicles and property when not in use.  Anything of value (money, electronics, credit/debit cards, jewelry) should be properly concealed and secured so as not to make for a welcome target to these prowling individuals.

These persons are not targeting one specific neighborhood in Towson for their activities, as we have seen many communities victimized in recent months but they are looking for "easy" targets--unlocked vehicles with unsecured property inside! Let's work together in eliminating this criminal element from Towson and improve our quality of life.  Secure your property, keep a watchful eye on your street and when you see suspicious persons or activity call 9-1-1 for Officers to respond and investigate.  We are stepping up our patrols, identifying those persons who are suspicious and arresting those who are acting in a criminal manner.  Together we can make Towson a safer community for all.

Thanks, Sgt Stephen Fink, 2815  PC06 COT

Safe Routes To School Forum

The Safe Routes to School Committee of the Rodgers Forge Community Association is hosting a public forum next Wednesday, January 30, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the library of RFES.

We will be sharing the results of a survey of parents and students taken last year, reviewing the committee’s initial take on the issues and challenges related to walking and biking to and from school, presenting ideas on how to improve the drop-off system for parents who drive their kids to school, and soliciting your input on these ideas.

The program will be divided into two parts: a presentation by the committee, and a break-out discussion among the participants, facilitated by committee members.

This is your chance to get involved directly in our efforts, shape how our children get to and from school safely, and have your opinions be heard.

For more information about SRTS, visit www.walkablerodgersforge.blogspot.com

RFCOP Crime report update Jan 14-26, 2013

Recent Car Breaks in:
There was a rash of car break ins on Friday evening, January 25th, approximately at 11:00 pm in the 100 block between Brandon and Stanmore Road.  Some broken into, some not locked.   We are again asking everyone to find alternate parking other than alleys.  We understand that parking is tight within the Forge due to multiple car residences, but it is illegal to park in the alleys and they are dark thus making it easier to be marked targets.  If you do have a parking pad in the back of your property you should highly consider outdoor lighting and turning it on at night.  An alternative would be motion sensor lighting.  You can purchase them for approximately $40.00 with various setting features.
Along with weekly emails (give or take a few days), Facebook and RFCOP web site, we would like to remind you the Rodgers Forge website also hosts “the Blog” which contains various information for the community.  The newest communication  feature,  “Next-door Rodgers Forge” which is a limited  private online network that is a new social media tool.  If you missed this in the Rodgers Forge News of Jan/Feb 2013 issue, below is the web address along with others that will help you be more informed about your neighborhood.

  • Do not keep spare keys anywhere inside the vehicle.
  • Avoid leaving valuables or money inside your car.
  • Cover or conceal anything of value that you must leave in the car.
  • Park your vehicle near your residence if possible, and leave residential lights on.

More On Robberies From BCPD

Towson has seen a rash of robberies in many communities

Since the end of December through the start of this month Towson has seen a rash of robberies in many communities.  On the afternoon of Thu, 1/10 there were two involving juvenile victims, one victim was a student at Towson High and three others were students at Dumbarton Middle and all were victimized as they were walking home from school.  The suspect in both is an African-American male who implied a weapon both times.  The Towson High student gave up her cell phone while the three Dumbarton students ran away from the suspect before surrendering any property.  These two incidents happened a short while after an unrelated suspect entered and robbed the Walgreen's on York Rd at Walker Ave, reported to Baltimore City.

On the evening of 12/31/12 a young man was robbed at knife point in Towson by three juveniles. Towson Precinct Detectives identified the juveniles involved, arrested them and recovered property.
During the first week of January four people, two men and two women were approached and robbed of their wallets (the men) and purses (the women) in separate incidents. In one incident the suspect was a white male, in the other three incidents it was a team of two African-American males but each time the victim was physically assaulted and robbed of their property.

All of these incidents are active investigations. As we develop more information on the persons responsible we will forward it to all of you but right now we just need you to get the word out to your neighbors to contact 9-1-1 any time suspicious persons or activity is seen.  Be aware of your surroundings at all times, keep your personal property close to your person, try not to use your cell phones as you walk outside and maybe keep as many valuables as possible at home and not on you as you go out.  Reduce the amount of valuables as you're out and about. If you should be a victim of a crime notify us via 9-1-1 as quickly as possible.

We will be out and about aggressively patrolling the neighborhoods to deter such activity and make our communities safer.

Thank You, Sgt Stephen Fink, 2815 Towson Precinct COT

Message From Councilman Marks Re: Recent Robberies

This afternoon, I spoke with Captain Trentzsch from the Towson police precinct regarding the series of robberies in Towson this week.

I know many parents are particularly concerned about the incidents that targeted students walking from school:

Residents with any information are asked to call 911.   The police believe a Silver Pontiac may have been involved, and that both these incidents are related.   There is a good description of the suspect in the Patch article.

School Resource Officers have been engaged in this process and the precinct is doing everything it can.  I've called Stu Sirota, the president of Rodgers Forge Community Association, and Cheri Pegues, the president of Dumbarton PTA, and am available to help in any way.

Tree Rodgers Forge News

TREE RODGERS FORGE COMMITTEE:
  • SEEKING VOLUNTEERS
  • STATUS REPORT
  • Meeting January 19, 9am @ 401 Murdock Rd.

The Tree Rodgers Forge Committee (co-chairs Ryan Cosgrove and Larry Fogelson, and members Stu Sirota and Christine Stutz) wish everyone a happy and healthy New Year. We thank all of our neighbors for their interest and participation in our fledgling (perhaps that should be “seedling”) program. We made great progress in 2012 with the Spring and Fall plantings of several dozen new trees with the support of Blue Water Baltimore, Baltimore County agencies, and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. We look forward to even greater success in 2013.
We plan to meet at 9 am on January 19 at 401 Murdock Rd. to start developing plans for a 2013 Spring planting program. We are in great need of new members, no special expertise required, and hope we will hear from a few of our neighbors to help us accelerate and expand our efforts. Please contact Larry (fogie@mindspring.com) or Ryan (rpcosgrove@gmail.com) to discuss your interests and to let us know if you would like to attend the meeting.

We are very excited by an opportunity offered to us by Vince Gardina, Director of the County Department of Environmental Protection and Sustainability. He proposed a pilot project that would thoroughly evaluate conditions and needs on a couple of blocks in RF followed by planting substantial new trees in the easements shared with the County. If this is to succeed, an outreach and organizing effort will be required.  We encourage interested residents to step forward to help us bring this offer to fruition. We would also welcome a volunteer who is willing to focus on community education.

The economic, aesthetic, and environmental value of trees to the County and to our community may be evident to members of the committee. However, we understand that many owners have concerns about trees and how they may adversely affect sidewalks, utilities, and lawns. Others, have expressed concerns such as safety, cleanup, or the work and expense involved in maintaining a healthy tree. We believe the benefits for both individual properties and to the community greatly outweigh these concerns. We hope residents will take the time to better educate themselves on these issues.
Unfortunately, the County has continued to cut down healthy mature trees in our community despite our efforts to encourage them to review their policies and practices. Baltimore County's still needs a comprehensive, progressive, and modern street tree program such as those that have been developed in many other Maryland jurisdictions, most notably in Baltimore City. There are supporters inside County government, but it would require a strong and vocal citizen's campaign for improvement from all areas of the County to make that happen.
We thank RFCA and all the residents of Rodgers Forge for their past support of our efforts and we look forward, with your support, to continuing and expanding this important work in 2013.

ALERT: Possible Scammer Posing As Verizon Employee

Some of our friends in Stoneleigh have sent multiple reports of a potential scammer in the area. See below for info:

Dear Stu:
as a former Stoneliegh resident I still receive their emails. See the one below.

Last night this guy rung my bell (at about 7:45 PM). I did not open. We should alert the RF residents...

cheers

We were visited by an individual claiming to be from Verizon about 5 pm today (Thursday,Jan 3rd). My daughter answered the door and he asked for my wife by name.  My daughter said my wife was unavailable and said they should send us something in the mail, and the man left.  I wasn't aware of the visitor until perhaps 20 minutes later.  She described him as a black male, clean shaven, 5'8"" to 5'11", medium build, mid-20's. He had a red jacket with a black "Verizon" logo on it and a black shirt underneath; she didn't see a vehicle.  I called Verizon and they couldn't confirm whether they had sent a salesperson (or anyone else) to our home; certainly we had not asked for a service call.

Dear neighbors

Watch out for possibly fake utility company service people or reps
who come to your house without a prior appointment, even if they
are wearing clothing with a company logo.

It would be safer to avoid answering any of their questions.

If you get such a visitor, you can ask them for their name and
identification number, but keep them out of your house. You could
tell them you are checking with their company about whether they
are legitimate (be sure to close the door and lock it after that!).

You can then call the Baltimore County dispatcher (410 887 2222)
and report the incident right away. Very likely they'll send a car
to our area to check on who this person is. If you feel like
putting time into it you can check with the company on whether they
really did send this person out.

If you have neighbors who don't use email much (or at all) please
pass this advice on to them.
Don't hesitate to call in suspicious activity over the break!

 Stay safe, and stay alert!
