RFCOP Crime Update - July 15th-21st, 2013

Shooting in the Forge last Wednesday:
We are all very aware of the shooting/murder on Murdock last Wednesday.  There have been numerous discussions and speculations as to what caused the event, concern for the individual and family, concern on housing and effects this has on our neighborhood.  The bottom line is that crime can happen anywhere, any time in any capacity.   We would all like to find a place that things like this would never happen.  But unfortunately that is not possible!!
The reality is that we need to be aware that any type of crime, including murder, which has happened in the best of neighborhoods (long before this incident) can happen in our neighborhood or anywhere.  There are many ways to make this happen.  One is helping to control the crime in your neighborhood and surrounding areas by letting the criminals know we are watching them.  Crime had decreased drastically since 2009 when Mike Calwell, John and I took leadership of the RFCOP.  We were lucky to have a dedicated few, approximately 8-10 patrollers in a neighborhood of 1,777 homes.  We have attempted to recruit new patrollers to broaden our “eyes and ears”, with little success.  The bike thefts, car break-ins and thefts have increased in volume and boldness.   Before, most thefts were those of opportunity – unlocked cars, garages, bike left out in plain view.  The amount of breaking and entering is on an up rise.
The truth is the crime will not become decreased on a permanent basis until we the community work together to make this happen.  Your COP group can only do so much with a handful of patrollers.  Since the murder in our home area we have had a couple of volunteers stepping forth requesting to join.  The truth is we need more.  Many have not experienced as one our patrollers mentioned, the difference between the day and night life of the Forge.
We desperately need more help to return the Forge to the safe environment that it has earned the reputation to have in the past few years.  If you can give even an hour per month, please contact us at rfcitizensonpatrol@gmail.com.

RFCOP: Crime is Not Welcome in Towson

Crime Is Not Welcome In Towson!
Crime is Not Welcome in Towson”. This is a catch phrase used by the Towson Area Citizens On Patrol. It’s likely a sentiment shared by all law abiding residents in Baltimore County. Unfortunately, there are still some who see opportunity in our beautiful neighborhoods and relaxed stance on crime.
The Baltimore County Police and our elected officials have made great strides in lowering crime numbers in Baltimore County. While it’s their obligation to do so, they can still use the assistance of the community in identifying suspicious activity. This can be participating in a Citizens On Patrol group or being a bit more aware on that morning jog. We as residents, know best when something looks out of the ordinary in the streets we live on. If you see something, say something. Call 911 to report anything suspicious. Anyone can be the eyes and ears for our law enforcement officers.
There are a number of resources available to Towson residents to interact with law enforcement and assist in keeping crime out of Towson. I’d encourage you to take advantage of these resources.
If you have any additional questions, contact myself, someone on your Community Association Board or the Police Department directly.

By the time you receive this report, most everyone has heard of the above incident at Murdock and Blenheim.  But remember this is an isolated incident of people driving through our community.  I will not down play how much this has affected our neighborhood, especially those in the immediate area.  But one good thing came out of this – the community showing how supportive and aware they are of our neighborhood.  Thank you all for calling the police, reporting what you knew when they interviewed the residents of the immediate area. – Thank you from the RFCOP

RFCOP Crime Report - May 25th - July 7th, 2013

RFCOP is back with their crime report:

We are hopefully back for good on the weekly crime report update.  The past few months my computer went down and it took a couple of months to save for a replacement.  (We have all been there.)  Now that everything is restored and back on line; this is the first report since March.  I lost some earlier emails so was only able to back track about 90 days of Spot Crime reports and what was currently available for BCPD Crime Blotter.
If anyone was following the Nextdoor Rodgers Forge web site, crime and safety, the RFCOP is extremely happy to see the interaction of the neighborhood keeping each abreast of illegal going on in the neighborhood.  It is also great to know that you are all calling 911.  This helps the police know where extra patrolling is needed.  Again thank you all for your patience and hopefully we will not have another interruption for a long time.
Remember always to “Lights On, Lock Up, and Look Out”.  But most importantly, if it feels or seems suspicious, call 911!!

Recent Bike Thefts

From Baltimore County Police Dept;

I am sending this information out to all community members so that those closest to the affected addresses can be aware of what's going on and for those others to get the word out so that hopefully you're not affected in the same way.
Listed below are locations of recent burglaries/bicycle thefts in the York Rd area of Towson.  Thus far we don't have any information on those responsible but we are asking for your help in getting those involved identified, charged and property returned.  Aside from the first location-which demonstrates the importance of securing one's property-the garages were left unsecured at these various locations which allowed for easy access. Once again we ask that you remind your family, friends and neighbors the importance of always properly securing one's home, vehicle, sheds and garages to best protect all property.
If you see suspicious persons in your neighborhood call 9-1-1 so that our Officers can respond to identify them. Keep your eyes open to everything that goes on around you and not only on your property but also that of your neighbors and call us when something is not right. Suspicious/unknown vehicles parked in your neighborhood call us. Get the tag number if you can when you call so that if the car is gone by the time Officers arrive they have information to follow up on.  The more active we are as residents in our communities the less attractive we become to those who wish violate our neighborhoods.
As we develop information on those responsible I will forward it to everyone to keep you informed of who and what to be looking for.  Thank you for all that you do to help keep Towson as safe as possible.
Sgt Stephen Fink, 2815 PC06 COT
